A Birthday Wander in Winchcombe
November 6, 2013
Today is my birthday and it is my habit never to go to work on my birthday.
This habit possibly stems from school days, when to let anyone know it was your birthday was to put yourself into great jeopardy. Maybe the stress of those far-off days has scarred me; or maybe I just prefer to relax and take it easy on my birthday.
In either event, this year I found myself in Winchcombe. I had a very nice pub lunch in the Corner Cupboard Inn with my wife, and then we took a wander around the village.

Reblog: James’ Funnies
November 6, 2013
Thanks so much for your endorsement, your approval is heartfelt!
Like most humanoids, Uncle Spike relishes the odd giggle moment or two during a humdrum week. My latest supplier of said giggles happens to be a blog which goes by the name of James’ Funnies.
Rather than just reblog an individual post, I would urge anyone feeling a little low, bored or just plain whimsical, to have a look at this guys blog. Happy Wednesday folks!!

Terre des Hommes carried out a 10-week sting near Amsterdam, posing on video chat rooms as “Sweetie”, a 10-year-old Filipina girl.
Some 20,000 men contacted her, with 1,000 found to have offered her money.
The names of these men – including 110 Britons – were passed to police.
When I visited the charity’s operations room – in a warehouse on the outskirts of Amsterdam – I watched as a researcher logged on to a chat room as Sweetie – incredibly life-like but created by a computer.
Within seconds, like sharks, men were circling.
Of the 1,000 men who were willing to pay Sweetie to take off her clothes in front of a webcam, 254 were from…

November 6, 2013
An 86-year-old California woman — the oldest female to complete Sunday’s New York City Marathon — reportedly died only a day after finishing the 26.2-mile race, according to the New York Daily News.
Joy Johnson, of San Jose, Calif., fell and hit her head around the 20th-mile mark of the grueling race, according to her 83-year-old sister, Faith Anderson, who was with Johnson in New York City. Although medics wanted to take Johnson — who had scratched up her face — to the hospital, she insisted on completing the race.
But the retired physical education teacher died Monday afternoon, hours after showing off her medal to Al Roker outside the Today show at 30 Rockefeller Center.
Her daughter, Diana Boydston, told NBC Bay Area on Tuesday that her mother collapsed shortly after meeting Roker, and then died around 3:30 p.m. at Bellevue Hospital Center…
