If you’re the sort of person who worries about asteroids, a new map from NASA’s Near Earth Object Program is unlikely to offer much reassurance. It shows that during the 20-year period from 1994 to 2013, the Earth’s atmosphere was hit by small asteroids resulting in fireballs (bolides) on at least 556 separate occasions–or essentially “all the time,” the agency said in a written statement released in conjunction with the map.

Most of the asteroids that came our way burned up harmlessly before hitting the ground–evidence that the atmosphere “does a great job of protecting Earth from small asteroids,” program executive Lindley Johnson said in the statement. The notable exception was the so-called Chelyabinsk meteor event, in which an asteroid measuring 17 to 20 meters in diameter exploded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on Feb. 15, 2013.

A man who stabbed four people on an Amtrak train in Michigan, including a conductor, was apprehended Friday night, police said. Michael Darnell Williams, 44, was charged with four counts of assault and intent to murder, Niles Police Chief Jim Millin told NBC News. Williams is being held on $1 million bail, according to NBC Chicago.

The suspect first boarded the train in Chicago. Michigan police responded to a call from Amtrak Chicago around 7 p.m. advising they had a man on the train who was “talking to himself, acting strangely and acting agitated,” Millin said at a news conference Friday. When police arrived at the train when it was stopped near Niles, north of South Bend, Indiana, the knife attack was already taking place. Officers rushed onto the train and shot the suspect with a Taser before arresting him.

More than 1.4 billion people around the world have no access to electricity. When the sun goes down, darkness comes up. Almost all of these people live in Africa and India. Kerosene generators are one solution, but they pollute the environment and are often too expensive for the millions of people living poverty. Those who rely on it go deeper into poverty just trying to read and work.

One innovation making its way into these regions is the solar-powered light bulb. Many of the newest models are comprised of a small solar panel, rechargeable batteries and an LED bulb, which requires very little energy to work.

President Barack Obama is prescribing time and vigilance to tackle problems as entrenched in American society as racism and bias.

He also is urging patience, saying progress usually comes in small steps.

 In an interview with BET, the president described his conversation with a group of young civil rights activists, including a leader of protests in Ferguson, Missouri, he hosted last week in the Oval Office.

“Do you think the Surgeon General is behind it?” Sean joked with me this morning, “I mean there were cigarettes and cigarillos involved in both so maybe they just really don’t want us to smoke.”

Sean’s attempt at humor masked the deep pain he is feeling as a black man in the wake of the Eric Garner grand jury decision in New York. Sean told me that when he heard the news he was by himself in his living room and broke down and cried. I heard the same from many of my friends who were absolutely devastated by the news.

I didn’t cry. But when I heard the news about Eric Garner, my casual faith in America died — and I am thankful for its death.
