Children who read books to a local barber have received a free haircut as part of a community event in Dubuque to help families prepare for the upcoming school year.

Barber Courtney Holmes traded the tales for trims on Saturday during the second annual Back to School Bash in Comiskey Park

Tayshawn Kirby, 9, of Dubuque, read from “Fats, Oils and Sweets,” by Carol Parenzan Smalley, informing Holmes that the average person eats 150 pounds of sugar each year. Before Tayshawn’s 10-year-old brother, Titan Feeney, took his turn in the barber chair, he told his brother the new look was great.

“I just want to support kids reading,” Holmes said.

St. Mark Youth Enrichment gave away books during the event, some of which were read to Holmes. Outreach coordinator Beth McGorry with St. Mark said she enjoyed watching Holmes help young children sound out the words they didn’t know yet.

Report comes in the wake of Sandra Bland’s death behind bars.

The number of people who died by suicide in local jails ticked up in 2013, even as the overall jail population declined, according to a new report.

Between 2012 and 2013, the number of suicides went from 300 to 327, a 9 percent increase, according to a report from the Justice Department released this month. That jump comes even as the overall jail population declined by 4 percent, the report said.

Total deaths were also up slightly between 2012 and 2013, from 958 to 967. Suicide, the report noted, has been the leading cause of death in jails every year since 2000. In 2013, 34 percent of inmates’ deaths were by their own hands.

Anjali Dhawan  Nominated me for this award. She’s an amazing lady!! And one of my earliest friends in this blog. She was my 3rd or 4th like in my first few days here. I have rituals I have to follow when it comes to weighing myself, which I do every morning.

I used to weigh myself all day long, back when I was anorexic. But now that I binge, it just depresses me because my weight shoots up mid-day and I just end up hating myself even more and it’s not good.

So, every morning, I get up and the first thing I do is use the bathroom. I make sure my hands are exceptionally dry after I wash them so I don’t have any extra weight from the water. I make sure to wear the same thing each morning. I used to weigh naked, but I can’t do that right now.** I ensure the scale is in the same spot and stable, all four legs touching the floor. What I loved most about Southpaw was the absence of all the bells and whistles.  It was straight story telling at it’s best.  No extraneous, over-the-top scrap to glamorize the movie — they just worked hard to keep it real.  Performances by Jake Gyllenhaal who played Billy Hope and Rachel McAdams who played his wife Maureen Hope were brilliant.
A couple who came up through the system hit it big when as a professional boxer, Billy became the light heavyweight champion of the world, 43 wins vs 0 losses.  Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson plays Billy’s manager, Jordan Mains, who was into everything from fixing fights to getting $30M HBO deals.  All seemed well until tragedy hit and Billy lost everything, including his daughter to Child Protective Services.  Southpaw is about Billy’s journey back with the help of Forest Whitaker who plays Titus “Tick” Wills, owner of a gym where Billy…
