RUSH (2013) – My rating: 8.5/10

Rush(2013)While I’m completely in awe over Chris Hemsworth’s physical physique, beautiful blue eyes and gorgeous locks, I am now, also in awe of his acting abilities.  Chris who also plays Thor, did an outstanding job of playing James Hunt in this “based on a true story” about the revelry between two race car drivers, (James Hunt and Niki Lauda, played by Daniel Brühl).  I loved the great Ron Howard’s directional approach to this topic of race cars, noisy engines and big egos with just the right amount of love interests and morality to keep it balanced and interesting.

Daniel César Martín Brühl González Domingo (his birth name) brought his character, Niki Lauda, to life with all the passion, motivation, and skill required to play this complex role.  Normally, I would have been bored to death watching cars run around a track, as I am not a fan of race…

I’ve discovered Twitter … which is not necessarily a good thing.

I thought Facebook was bad enough but now I’ve found Twitter I think life as I knew it is officially over.

I’ve had a Twitter account for quite a while … mainly to plug my written maunderings, as all writers are urged to do these days. It’s supposed to help us ‘build a brand’ and boost sales of our books, blah di blah di blah. Meh … that’s a load of gentlemen’s seeding equipment.

Approaching the shoreline of Lake Natron in Tanzania, photographer Nick Brandt faced an eerie sight: There, lying on the earth as still and stiff as statues, were calcified corpses of a variety of birds and bats that had met their untimely demise after crashing into the deadly waters.

“No one knows for certain exactly how [these animals] die, but it appears that the extreme reflective nature of the lake’s surface confuses them, causing them to crash into the lake,” Brandt writes in his new photo book Across the Ravaged Land. “The water has an extremely high soda and salt content, so high that it would strip the ink off my Kodak film boxes within a few seconds. The soda and salt causes the creatures to calcify, perfectly preserved, as they dry.”

Bill Clinton: GOP ‘Begging For America To Fail’

Former President Bill Clinton weighed in on an increasingly likely government shutdown in an interview with ABC’s ‘This Week’. Clinton criticized Republican demands, as well as their obsession with Obamacare.

“I’ve never seen a time– can you remember a time in your lifetime when a major political party was just sitting around, begging for America to fail?”

The House voted early Sunday to make major cuts and delays to the Affordable Care Act in exchange for continuing to fund the government. The bill marks the 43rd time that House Republicans have voted to defund or repeal Obamacare. The White House and Senate Democrats have already said that this kind of a demand is a non-starter.

Clinton also said President Obama was right to not take Republican demands seriously.

“If I were the president, I wouldn’t negotiate over these draconian cuts that are gonna take…

Are You A Dealer 2.0 Yet?

As we enter an age of being online all the time, the internet is no longer a separate faction of the human experience. It’s not just an occasional tool – it’s an extension of ourselves. With that being said, the way in which we do business is undergoing drastic changes. Whether the old-school salesperson likes it or not.

The days of Auto Dealer 1.0 are over, where people relied on a handful of reasonably available sources to make the best automotive decision. One source being the salesperson, another being the ads they’d seen about the product, and the other being what they’d heard from friends and family. Relationships were built upon an entirely different foundation before Kelly Blue Book was at the fingertips of damn near every customer.

Whether you’re a top dawg, an old dawg, or a green pea, if you’re experiencing strain because of the saturation of over-information…

Judge Orders Angola 3’s Herman Wallace Released From Prison

After 40 years in solitary confinement, the terminally ill inmate may be going home.

U.S. District Judge Brian A. Jackson did a remarkably good and decent thing today — something that every judge should aspire to do in the right circumstances. He found a way to bring a small measure of justice to a man whose entire life had been rife with injustice. He found a way to order the immediate release of Herman Wallace, a terminally ill prisoner who spent 40 years in solitary confinement at the notorious Angola prison in Louisiana in a 6′ by 9′ cell for a murder there was no valid evidence he committed.

Last week, I wrote about this case here at The Atlantic because I felt it comprised so many of the failings of the American justice system. A black man whose trial is marked by racial animus…

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum

B Gourley's avatarTiger Riding for Beginners

I visited the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum last week. I wasn’t sure what to expect. The admission fee is only 30 rupees (less than 50 cents in USD terms.) I ended up being pleasantly surprised. It took me back to childhood visits to Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. Granted it’s neither on the scale of the windy city’s museum nor as well-maintained, but it’s largely interactive and has some fascinating–if often retro–displays. It’s great for kids or adults who’d like to revisit the science that they’re forgetting, and to do so in a way that’s entertaining.

The museum consists of five exhibit halls and a few other stand-alone displays both inside and outside the building. Outside one will see an old locomotive, a copy of India’s first indigenously-built fighter jet, an Archimedes water drill, and a big steam turbine. One’s visit inside, unfortunately, begins inauspiciously with a solitary…

Stonehenge Path Offers New Clues To Site’s Age-Old Secrets

Modern researchers have puzzled for centuries over the striking stone construction known as Stonehenge. But now researchers have discovered new aspects of the site, including a processional road, that may eventually help unravel some of its mysteries.

There are many theories about why ancient peoples constructed the prehistoric megalithic monument, which is estimated to have been built between 3000 and 1520 B.C. Located outside Salisbury, England, Stonehenge is the focus of ongoing research projects coordinated by English Heritage, a cultural preservation agency.

One of those projects recently uncovered previously hidden sections of an ancient pathway that researchers believe led directly to the site from the Avon River in the nearby town of Amesbury.

Known as the Avenue, the pathway is believed to have been built sometime between 2600 and 2200 B.C., according to English Heritage. Over time, parts of the road were obscured, and…
