Feds charge mobster in $6 million Lufthansa heist at Kennedy Airport that was portrayed in ‘Goodfellas’
January 29, 2014

The FBI rounded up the Bonanno family big Vincent Asaro in connection to the Dec. 11, 1978 heist, in which a well-planned robbery of Lufthansa cargo — organized by the late James (Jimmy the Gent) Burke — resulted in nearly $6 million in stolen cash and jewelry. Vincent Asaro was also charged for the death of Paul Katz, whose body was buried at Burke’s home.
The infamous 1978 Lufthansa heist became a case so cold that investigators once needed two days to thaw the frozen body of a murdered suspect.Thirty-five years later, with the help of four informants, the feds finally busted the last “Goodfella” standing in the $6 million robbery immortalized in the Martin Scorsese mob movie.

At 20 Million Copies Sold, Skyrim Is in the Top 20 Bestselling Games of All Time
January 28, 2014

This is technically last week’s news – last Thursday’s to be precise: Skyrim has sold 20 million copies since it launched in November 2011.
That figure was buried in a press release about Bethesda’s upcoming The Elder Scrolls Online, so mentioned almost offhand, but I noticed a few sites picking it up this morning, and I understand why. While something as mainstream-obvious as Grand Theft Auto V already has Skyrim by some 9 million copies, Skyrim is a roleplaying game. Make that a deeply traditional roleplaying game: the apotheosis of computer-automated realizations of the sort of thing Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson were thinking about back in the early 1970s.

Behind The Cello

Yo-Yo Ma reflects on the role of arts, creativity and the edges of life. His comments are adapted from a conversation with WorldPost.
In our highly interdependent global civilization, a lot of things are not working.
When I travel around the country and the world to perform, I pick up in my many conversations a growing sense that the first Enlightenment — which posited the rule of reason over emotion and feelings — is getting a little creaky, confining and even counterproductive.
The neurobiologist Antonio Damasio has written about Descartes’ error that, to put it in shorthand, “I think therefore I am.” Damasio instead makes the compelling argument, empirically based in neurology, that feeling and emotions as expressed in art and music play a central role in high-level cognitive reasoning.

IN THE LIGHT

Fully having faith Is to believe that you know no matter what happens,
Too find out that you are dying and may suffer through It all or go quickly
That there Is a better place, you will not ever again be In pain or sad.
You will not lay In a dark box alone with no breath afraid forever,
When you die what happens If you choose to stay, not want to go away?
In the light, Is that where we are suppose to go, how will we know?
What’s there In the light, Is It a path to the creator of all life?
In the light will we see a spectacular sight, will their be family waiting,
In the light things are not known until It be our time to go.
When It’s time, with faith you’ll walk In the light without fright.

Steve Davis Describes How One Blue Dot Managed To Save Millions Of Lives
January 25, 2014
PATH President and CEO Steve Davis joined HuffPost Live at Davos on Thursday to share how a simple solution can fix a major medical problem.
Davis explained the “cold chain problem” — which he described as “technical and geeky,” but said is actually “a really big problem” — where vaccines that need to stay cold to be effective are warming up before they reach those who need them. Davis said his company helped with a simple solution to the problem by creating a device similar to the “little blue dot” on chicken packaging that let’s users know if the meat has been thawed or not.
