Vets Respond To Fort Hood Shooting: Let’s End The Stigma Around Mental Health Issues
April 11, 2014
Huffpost Impact
In the aftermath of Wednesday’s mass shooting at Fort Hood, veterans and mental health advocates stressed the importance of reducing the stigma around mental health issues in the military.
On Wednesday afternoon, Ivan Lopez, 34, opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas, killing three and injuring 16 before turning the gun on himself. The violence was particularly disheartening because Fort Hood was the site of the worst mass killing at an American military installation, which left 13 people dead and more than 30 injured in 2009.
So when word emerged that Lopez, who served a four-month tour of duty in Iraq in 2011, was being evaluated for post-traumatic stress disorder, a familiar firestorm erupted.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: The Winter Soldier (2014) – My rating: 8/10
April 10, 2014
Maybe it’s me but I didn’t like the second version of Captain America as much as the original. It started out okay but turned into a plot I’ve seen and heard much too much.
I don’t want to spoil it so I won’t get too in depth. There’s lots of action and special effects however, I didn’t feel the excitement and mystery as I did in the first Captain America. There was a good twist but still, it wasn’t strong enough to make me say wow!! One of the problems with today’s movies and TV/Cable series, is they wait too long to release a new sequel or start the next iteration of the series. Many times, people forget some significant pieces of the original story. Sometimes the producers are banking on our memories to get a point across. A couple of folks told me that they were confused about Captain America’s age.
In the first…

Striking Photos Aim To Redefine ‘Natural’ Female Beauty
April 10, 2014
Huffpost Women
In 2007, London-based photographer Ben Hopper started “Natural Beauty,” a photo series designed to challenge what he described as the societal “brainwashing” done by the beauty industry.
Now, nearly seven years later, Hopper released his first official set of these photographs to The Huffington Post. Using an eclectic group of models, actresses, designers and friends, Hopper’s pictures highlight a woman’s beauty, her armpit hair, and the timely reminder that those two things are in no way mutually exclusive.
The images play on the fact that armpit and body hair have been stigmatized both here in the United States and abroad. Rarely, if ever, do you see a woman in the public eye who isn’t conscious of removing much of her body hair.

Meet The Three Female Medical Students Who Destroyed Gender Norms A Century Ago

Every so often, the same mysterious image seems to pop up on the internet. The black-and-white portrait looks to be at least a hundred years old, and yet, it is of an Indian woman, a Japanese woman and a Syrian woman, sitting in Pennsylvania..The photograph — doing rounds this time thanks to Jaipreet Virdi-Dhesi, a Ph.D. student who posted the photograph on her blog after stumbling on it while researching 19th century ear surgery — is remarkable enough to warrant the fuss. The three magnificently dressed ladies were students at the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, snapped at a Dean’s reception, in 1885.

Early Start To Heart Disease? Veggies May Be Cure
April 8, 2014

While heart disease almost always strikes in middle or old age, Americans are starting down the road very young — as children and young adults, several studies released Friday show. But prevention might be as easy as eating more fruits and veggies.
One study showed that nearly a third of kids screened at pediatric clinics in Houston already had unhealthy cholesterol levels by age 9 to 11. Another team found young women who reported eating the most fruits and vegetables in their 20s were 40 percent less likely to have dangerously blocked arteries in their 40s.
Taken together, they show that while heart disease starts early, good eating habits early in life might be able to prevent it.

Chasing Sunsets in El Nido
April 5, 2014
One of the most iconic images of any beach is during sunset but I cannot find a glimpse of the setting sun when I walked along Barangay Buena Sarte on our first afternoon in El Nido. As El Nido is a beautiful place, I thought there must be some good spot here for an astonishing view of the sunset so I hailed a tricycle along Rizal Street and asked the driver to take me somewhere where the sun sets beautifully.
The tricycle driver was Mang Jun, a local of EL Nido with an average built and probably in his early 40’s. His dark skin showed years of working under the sun but his sincere smile made me comfortable with him.
He first brought me beside the road in Barangay Corong-corong, overlooking other islands. From there, I could already see the golden sun starting to set over…

Teen Beaten So Badly His Nose Detached From His Face As Classmates Allegedly Cheered
April 5, 2014
Huffpost Crime
A Georgia teen says he was the victim of a savage beating during which his classmates cheered on his attacker.
CBS Atlanta reports that, last Tuesday, 16-year-old David Egan, who attends Parkview High School in Gwinnett County, was beaten so badly his nose was detached from his skull.
“I turn back and I felt something hit me,” Egan said. “I didn’t even see him move. The first hit everything went blurry. Next thing I know I was on the ground. I didn’t even see it coming.”
