Congress Could Easily Fix A Huge Obamacare Problem. It Won’t
August 9, 2014
Huffpost Politics
A handful of simple words in a piece of legislation could prevent more than 4 million people losing their health insurance, but Congress isn’t going to write them.
At issue are several lawsuits against Obamacare moving through the legal system that may go all the way to the Supreme Court. Among other things, the suits contend the precise phrasing of the Affordable Care Act means that low- and moderate-income health insurance consumers in most states can’t receive subsidies to make coverage more affordable.
Lawmakers could end that threat any time by changing the law’s wording to make it clear subsidies are available nationwide. But in today’s take-no-prisoners Congress, Republicans won’t let it happen and Democrats won’t even try.

“I am a brave Police Officer and you are a shallow, show off bully alligator. I have the gun, what do you have? Things are tough all over. Beat it before I knock those teeth out.”

Last night, I pressed Our Grandmother from Eddie Two Hawks. In my comments, I mentioned Wendell Berry and the way I understand place in his writing. Wendell Berry’s work is used by the deep ecology movement which in many ways is not a movement. It is a way of life. For years, I critiqued the environmental movement as a corporate movement with many of the same characteristics of the business they criticized. Wendell Berry, similar to all good farmers, values the land. He speaks about as if it were living. It is not separate from us, but a part of us. When I think about this, it makes local and community environmental work incredibly important. It decries the corporate pillaging that goes on both sides of the equation.
Wendell Berry speaks of the land as a living and animate thing. This makes sense. The…

City Pooches
August 8, 2014
Ankara, early February, and we came across a rather bizarre event – Sunday City Pooches in the park (with their owners, I might add).
.
.
There were doggies of all shapes and sizes, most on leads, others just wandering around, socialising, for want of a better phrase (or, ‘bottom sniffing’ to be exact).

It was a sunny but cold Sunday afternoon, just above freezing in fact, but folk were relaxing on the grass, well wrapped up mind you. It was a lovely, albeit surreal atmosphere.

Big dogs, little poochies – all seemed welcome.

It was comical how the few scraps and scuffles that kicked off were ALWAYS started by some tiny Jack Russell, or similar. There were some BIG woofers there, but the little’uns ruled 😉
