Roman J. Israel, Esq. is a legal drama written and directed by Dan Gilroy. The movie focuses on a lawyer who is forced to start working for a large law firm after his small-firm partner suffers a heart attack. While the movie never reveals the true condition of the surviving lawyer, I suspect Asperger. I’m not sure why this was not pursued because I think it’s extremely important to the film. Roman J. Israel, ESQ is a pretty dark yet insightful story for which I have mixed feelings about.

The Shape of Water is a dark romantic fantasy directed by Guillermo del Toro and co-written by del Toro and Vanessa Taylor. The film is set in Baltimore of 1962. The movie has so many great messages that extends far beyond the obvious fantasy most of us will seek it out for. It’s strong, profound and worthy of all the up coming nominations that have already started pouring in. There’s no rose colored glasses nor any hidden secrets to be discovered. There’s just pure love and of course, good vs evil and I loved it! WARNING: there’s a fair amount of sex or sexual suggestion making it somewhat risque for the younger crowd.
Downsizing is an American science fiction comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne and also co-written by Payne and Jim Taylor. What an adventure Downsizing has turned out to be. This movie was so unique, I was unable to predict anything. However, this is where most of my praises end because there are a million reasons Downsizing could never happen. This movie is the fantasy of all fantasies. I think I have the most problem with 5″ people, that’s just not feasible.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is an American epic space opera written and directed by Rian Johnson. It is the second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the eighth main installment of the Star Wars franchise, following Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). The Last Jedi is produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and includes an all star cast, including the late Carrie Fisher who past in December of 2016. Star Wars never gets old. I still find the series to be just as refreshed and interesting as the first. The battle for the reign of the Empire is just as existing and just as much of a struggle as any two countries fighting for control of territory, Star Wars is just more modern and more futuristic. May the Force be with them!
The Disaster Artist is a biographical comedy-drama film produced and directed by James Franco. Written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the film is based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book of the same name and chronicles the making of Tommy Wiseau’s 2003 cult film “The Room”, which was considered by many, one of the worst movies ever made. In my opinion, The Disaster Artist is one of the most bizarrely good films I’ve seen in a long, long time. While it was entertaining, it was strange and if you’ve never heard of “The Room” your curiosity will be peaked to the nth degree.
Daddy’s Home 2 is a comedy sequel to Daddy’s Home directed by Sean Anders and written by Anders and John Morris. While it was descent, it wasn’t as good. It starts out pretty mundane before it builds up to the comedy you though you came to see and there’s not quite enough of that to make it the hit of the original.
The Foreigner is a 2017 action thriller film directed by Martin Campbell and written by David Marconi and is based on the 1992 novel, The Chinaman by Stephen Leather. I was thrilled at the aspect of seeing a movie featuring Jackie Chan without a comedic sidekick. I wasn’t too happy with the reviews The Foreigner received. This is why I like to see and judge for myself. Needless to say, I disagree with the critics, as I liked the movie.
Justice League is a superhero film based on the DC Comics superhero team of the same name consisting of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. The film is directed by Zack Snyder with a screenplay by Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon, from a story by Terrio and Snyder. There are many reasons I’m glad Justice League was created. I was a very unhappy camper when they decided to kill off Superman, especially by the likes of Batman, who actually has no super powers. That was the biggest injustice in super hero history, in my opinion. Justice League redeemed that unfortunate event, which made my day. I also got to see Aquaman in all his glorious action, which also made my day. So much eye candy, so little time! I was well entertained as well.
Thor: Ragnarok is a superhero action film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor and is the sequel to 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. The film is directed by Taika Waititi from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing team of Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. It is my humble opinion that Thor: Ragnarok is the best of the Thor trilogy. It’s well written with an excellent plot and an enjoyable host of characters, new and old. As of late, we’ve been bombarded with super heroes and gods from other planets as well as AFI, cyborgs, robots and transforming machines that come to save or destroy the world, in abundance. Not that Thor is not more of the aforementioned group, it’s just more relatable and pleasant in terms of the human aspect.
The Book of Henry is drama directed by Colin Trevorrow and written by Gregg Hurwitz. The Book of Henry is about an 11 year old genius who has taken on the role of an adult including concocting a plan to save a young girl living next door from abuse. This film is not what the title implies but instead a beautiful story with multiply messages that says a whole lot about our society, our youth and gives us insight into some real soul searching.
