New Amsterdam is a new medical drama about a hospital that is breaking all the rules to service it’s patients, NOT by the book. New Amsterdam is based on the book, Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer.
Its opening episode is an attention getter when the hospital’s new director and Chief of Medicine, Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) fires the entire cardio-thoracic surgical department because of their statistics. Max’s aim is to reform the neglected facility by tearing up its bureaucracy and provide exceptional care to patients. Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) becomes the new head of cardio-thoracic surgery and is in a semi-quasi relationship with Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery). The Hate U Give is a drama directed by George Tillman Jr. and written by Audrey Wells. It is based on Angie Thomas’ 2017 novel of same name. The Hate U Give focuses on racism and the numerous shootings of young Black unarmed men by White cops. The plot follows the fallout after a high school student witnesses a police shooting and is easily one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
A Star Is Born is a romantic musical drama produced and directed by Bradley Cooper (in his directorial debut) and written by Cooper, Eric Roth and Will Fetters. This film is a remake of the 1937 film of the same name. It marks the third American remake of the original 1937 film (which starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March), after the 1954 musical (starring Judy Garland and James Mason) and the 1976 rock musical (with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson).
The House with a Clock in Its Walls is a 2018 American family fantasy film directed by Eli Roth, based on the 1973 juvenile fiction novel of the same name by John Bellairs. The film follows a young boy who is sent to live with his uncle in his creaky old house. He soon learns it was previously also inhabited by his uncle’s former friend who happens to be a warlock. I thought this movie was going to be a really good one, which is not the case.
The Predator is a science fiction action film directed by Shane Black and written by Black and Fred Dekker. It is the fourth installment in the Predator film series (the sixth counting the two Alien vs. Predator films), following Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990), and Predators (2010). Black had a supporting role in the original film, while John Davis returns as producer from the first three installments. The Predator follows a group of PTSD-afflicted soldiers who’s mission is to destroy a pair of alien Predators. This is not a film I wanted to see but after sitting through it, I decided it was pretty entertaining and even exciting.
Searching is a thriller directed by Aneesh Chaganty and written by Chaganty and Sev Ohanian. A father tries to find his missing 16-year-old daughter. Searching is described by the media as being the first mainstream Hollywood thriller headlined by an Asian-American actor. It seems race relations ARE getting a little better!
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a musical romantic comedy written and directed by Ol Parker, from a story by Parker, Catherine Johnson, and Richard Curtis. It is a follow-up to the 2008 film Mamma Mia!, which in turn is based on the musical of the same name using the music of ABBA. Both a prequel and a sequel, the plot is set after the events of the first film, and also features flashbacks to 1979, telling the story of Donna Sheridan’s arrival on the island of Kalokairi and her first meetings with her daughter Sophie’s three possible fathers. I really wasn’t interested in seeing this movie, however I’m glad I did. Mamma Mia! Here we go again was a pretty descent sequel with loads of good music. This is a feel good movie.
