A group of animated people.

Flee (Danish: Flugt) is a Danish animated docudrama directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen. It follows the story of a man called Amin Nawabi (not his real name), who shares his hidden past of fleeing his country for the first time. Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau serve as executive producers. An animated documentary telling the true story about a man’s need to confront his past in order to truly have a future. Amin arrived as an unaccompanied minor in Denmark from Afghanistan.  I have never seen an animated film like Flee.  Despite the sad and rough subject, I loved the storytelling and the outcome.

The film follows Adult Amin Nawabi (Amin Nawabi), Young Amin Nawabi (Daniel Karimyar), and Teenage Amin Nawabi (Fardin Mijdzadeh), who, on the verge of marrying his husband, shares his story for the first time about his hidden past fleeing his home country of Afghanistan to Denmark as a refugee…

Spider-Man No Way Home poster.jpgSpider-Man: No Way Home is a superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and the 27th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. In this version of Spider-man, Peter Parker asked Dr. Strange to use a magic spell to hide his identity that was exposed in the last Spider-man movie.  I wasn’t in love with the last two Spider-man films but I found No Way Home to be quite good.

****  SPOILERS BELOW  ****

RACISM AND COLOURISM: TWO SIDES TO A COIN

I asked my uncle once during the holidays what racism felt like or if he had ever faced it, then he said he had faced it and felt it but didn’t really bother about it any longer. He went on to further explain to me that the worst kind of racism was institutional racism, where […]

NO TIME TO DIE (2021) – My rating 8/10

Carol's avatarCAROL's WORLDS

No Time to Die is a spy film and the twenty-fifth in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions. This is Daniel Craig’s fifth and final portrayal of a fictional British MI6 agent, James Bond. No Time to Die is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga from a screenplay by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Fukunaga, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.  In No Time To Die, Bond has left active service with MI6 and is recruited by the CIA to find a kidnapped scientist, which leads to a showdown with a powerful adversary. I thought the movie was great, I just didn’t understand the reason for the ending.

No Time to Die opens with a young Madeleine Swann (Coline Defaud), who witnesses the murder of her mother by terrorist Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek) in a failed attempt to murder her father Mr. White. Madeleine shoots Safin, but he survives. She flees onto a…

Encanto poster.jpgEncanto is a computer-animated musical fantasy-comedy produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The 60th film produced by the studio, it was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, co-directed by Charise Castro Smith, who co-wrote the screenplay with Bush and produced by Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer, with original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Encanto is certainly a good lesson for children everywhere to learn about self-esteem and loving family.  I liked the movie very much, especially the hit song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”.

Encanto follows a multigenerational Colombian family, the Madrigals, led by a 75 year-old matriarch (Abuela Alma (voice: María Cecilia Botero) –  whose children and grandchildren—except for Mirabel Madrigal (voice: Stephanie Beatriz)—receive magical gifts from a miracle that helps them serve the people in their rural community called Encanto. When Mirabel learns that the family is losing their…

Drive My Car movie poster.jpegDrive My Car (Japanese: ドライブ・マイ・カー, Hepburn: Doraibu mai kā) is a Japanese drama co-written and directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. It is primarily based on Haruki Murakami’s short story of the same name from his 2014 collection Men Without Women while taking inspiration from other stories in it. The film follows Yūsuke Kafuku as he directs a multilingual production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima and grapples with the death of his wife, Oto. This is a very deep movie.  I thought the movie was too long (three hours) but a decent story.

****  SPOILERS BELOW  ****

Actor and theater director Yūsuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is married to Oto (Reika Kirishima), a screenwriter. Oto conceives her stories during sex and narrates them to her husband, Yūsuke. After watching her husband in a performance of Waiting for Godot, Oto introduces Yūsuke to her frequent collaborator, the young actor Kōji Takatsuki (Masaki Okada)

The Worst Person in the World is a Romantic, Comedy Drama directed by Joachim Trier and written by Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt. The Worst Person in the World chronicles four years in the life of a young woman who navigates the troubled waters of her love life and struggles to find her career path, leading her to take a realistic look at who she really is. I watched the film because it was Oscar-nominated. Upon completing the movie, I thought it was a very good story.

Julie (Renate Reinsve), a medical student in Oslo, is having difficulty trying to figure out what she wants in life. Julie starts out studying to be a doctor, then a surgeon, then a psychiatrist, then a writer before settling on being a photographer but ends up working as a clerk in a book store near the university campus.  She meets Aksel Willman…

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings poster.jpeg

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Shang-Chi. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Shang-Chi is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, from a screenplay he wrote with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham. Shang-Chi is forced to confront his past when his father, leader of the Ten Rings organization, draws Shang-Chi and his sister into a search for a mythical village. I was really hyped about seeing Shang-Chi — It didn’t let me down.  Fantastic film!

Approximately one thousand years ago, Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung) discovers the mystical ten rings which grant immortality and godly powers. He establishes the Ten Rings organization, conquering kingdoms and toppling governments throughout history. In 1996, Wenwu searches for Ta Lo, a village said to harbor…
