21-year-old model Yityish Aynaw, a former IDF officer, made aliyah some 10 years ago.

Yityish Aynaw, a former Israeli army officer, has become the first Ethiopian-born Israeli to win the Miss Israel pageant.

A panel of judges awarded the title to Aynaw, a 21-year-old model who came to Israel about a decade ago, at the International Convention Center Haifa on Wednesday.

“It’s important that a member of the Ethiopian community wins the competition for the first time,” she was quoted by Israeli media as telling the judges in response to a question. “There are many different communities of many different colors in Israel, and it’s important to show that to the world.” Aynaw came to Israel with her family when she was 12. Acclimating to Israel was difficult at first, Aynaw said, but she picked up the language quickly with the help of a friend.

Tens of thousands of Venezuelans followed Chavez’ coffin, draped in Venezuela’s blue, red and yellow flag, as it was moved through the capital city of Caracas, from the hospital where the charismatic leftist leader died to its destination, about two miles away.

A Venezuelan government source estimated that some 8,000 people were gathered outside the Military Hospital where he died, waiting for Chavez’s private guards to begin the procession.

Just the other night I thought for sure
that someone had broken into our house.
I had fallen asleep on the couch while
watching a Perry Mason episode.

I was awoken by a crash that got me to
my feet before I was even awake. I was
sure either the roof caved in, or someone
had kicked in the back door.

Not one to sleep with my guns, I crept
my way from the living room into the
kitchen.

I observed the door to back room was
intact which meant it had to be the door
off the porch.

Grabbing a handy billy club I inched ever
closer to the doorway of the kitchen. In a
balanced crouch with billy club raised I
sped into the kitchen.

I was looking at the three faces of the
wife’s cats. They looked innocent, the door
was still there, and I lowered the…

Oberlin College canceled classes Monday to hold a “Day of Solidarity” following a month of hateful vandalism and the latest report of a person spotted on campus wearing a Ku Klux Klan-style outfit.

Throughout February, multiple acts of vandalism on the Ohio campus have targeted the black, Jewish and LGBT communities with hate speech, the Oberlin Review reports.

Researchers from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum have concluded that over 40,000 Nazi camps and ghettos existed during Hitler’s reign of terror between 1933 to 1945.

The total is far higher than most historians had previously estimated, according to The New York Times.

Geoffrey Megargee and Martin Dean, the lead editors of the project, have compiled the thousands of sites in a multivolume encyclopedia that is being published by the Holocaust Museum. Each volume catalogs thousands of sites, providing a comprehensive history of the “living and working conditions, activities of the Jewish councils, Jewish responses to persecution, demographic changes, and details of the liquidation of the ghettos.”

The tongue is a rudder and a bit, according to James 3. Though a small member of the body, it sets the direction of your life. It defines reality. Worse than being bombarded by negative thoughts is giving “air time” to them on your tongue. It takes it up to a higher level. It makes mere thoughts

materialize. Cutting yourself down in your own mind is bad but worse is cutting yourself down with your tongue. It’s legitimizes something that should be simply dismissed as rubbish.

This warning turns into a promise for blessing. Don’t brush off the power of your tongue to pronounce good for your life. Like a rudder that turns around a huge freighter, like a bit that turns around an unwieldy beast, the tongue can turn around your life. Prayer, then, is doubly good. Not only does it involve positive confession, it involves God! Discount God…

Recently, I attended a presentation and the person commented, “The only now we have is this one right here.” I began to use this with students. In the busyness of life, what do I want to remember? If I am present, right here, now, I can see the extraordinary aspects of the world I live in the now. I bring my mind into the room and it joins the shell, my body. William Stafford shared this Zen-like view of the world in this poem.

Starting here, what do you want to remember?
How sunlight creeps along a shining floor?
What scent of old wood hovers, what softened
sound from outside fills the air?
