About My Father is a comedy directed by Laura Terruso from a screenplay by Sebastian Maniscalco and Austen Earl. The film actually stars Maniscalco and is loosely based on his life and his relationship with his father.
The trailers for this movie seemed very funny. Unfortunately, the funniest lines were in the trailers. About My Father was, in a word, cute.
Sebastian (Sebastian Maniscalco) shares with his traditional Italian immigrant father Salvo (Robert De Niro) his plan to propose to his American girlfriend Ellie (Leslie Bibb). Since Sebastian would like to present Ellie with his deceased grandmother’s ring, Salvo holds the ring hostage and insists on accompanying Sebastian, Ellie, and her parents Bill (David Rasche) and Tigger (Kim Cattrall) for a weekend holiday. There are enormous differences between their two cultures and the couple have nothing in common, so Salvo expects the relationship will end before it begins.
