The human mind naturally fears change. The turmoil of a rapidly changing world will always create fear and worry, and this fear and worry will always appear in the art of these time periods. It is for this reason that M.H. Abrams defines the Victorian Period of England as a period filled with “widespread anxiety.” The industrial revolution had so vastly changed the society of England that its effects were clearly noted and many authors wrote specifically on this subject. However, all authors of this period were subconsciously influenced by the anxiety of this time period, and this subject shows up in all writing of this period.
