There is a saying like ‘Everything in a coconut tree is useful’. It gives coconuts. The tender coconuts are used for quenching the thirst. The leaves are used for roofing, partitions. The trunk is used for furniture and firewood. From the coconuts we get coconut water, coconut and coconut oil. The skin of the coconuts are used to make coir products. After filtering out the coconut oil and sometimes coconut milk (used widely in Kerala dishes), the cakes are used as cattle feed. Some coconut trees are used to filter out toddy, which is a local drink with mild alcoholic content. In the olden days, every house hold used to lease out a couple of coconut trees for toddy tapping and in return the landlord got fresh toddy everyday. That was the secret of their energy.
