
Actor Andy Griffith, best known for his title role on The Andy Griffith Show, died Tuesday morning at his home on Roanoke Island, N.C., local television station WITN reports. He was 86.
At press time, no cause of death has been reported, though Griffith had quadruple-bypass surgery in 2000 and hip surgery in 2007 after a fall, USA Today reports. WITN reports that an ambulance was sent to Griffith’s home early Tuesday morning.Born in Mt. Airy, N.C., Griffith attended the University of North Carolina. From there, he went on to star in a variety of movies and television shows, beginning with the film A Face in the Crowd in 1957 with Patricia Neal and regular appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show throughout the 1950s.
