
For the second time in a week, an extremely rare and creepy oarfish washed up far enough on a California beach for some lucky, or maybe unlucky, beachgoers to discover. “A 13-and-a-half-foot-long oarfish was spotted floating and was pulled to shore by a snorkeler, and just last Sunday an 18-foot oarfish was found just about 35 miles west of Oceanside.” (Via WTVJ )
As big as both of these fish are, according to experts, they are on the small side, comparatively speaking. (Via Catalina Island Marine Institute ) “The oarfish, which can grow to more than 50 feet, is the world’s largest bony fish and lives mostly at great depths. Because of its size and menacing appearance, the oarfish may be the source of the sea serpent tales.” (Via Los Angeles Times )
