There’s no doubt that Alzheimer’s is a terrible, irreversible disease that affects more than 5 million people in the United States. And that number is only going to grow as more baby boomers enter their golden years.
One of the biggest challenges with Alzheimer’s, from a clinical perspective, is diagnosing whether or not a person has the disease early enough so that they can adequately prepare their lives for what’s ahead. One area that researchers have been focused on is the presence of beta-amyloid plaques in areas of the brain responsible for memory; there’s evidence that a person with Alzheimer’s often develops these plaques, sometimes years before symptoms appear.
New brain scanning technologies now make it possible to detect the existence of these plaques, but there’s a lot of debate over the accuracy, invasiveness and high cost of these scans.
